History and Performance Notes

The rhythmic motif of the Prelude was invented one day while noodling around on the recorder before a Recorder Society chapter meeting. A light tongue is needed to keep the tempo and play those repeating notes.

Be careful at Bar 29 when the counting really gets hairy! Also, the idea behind the ending of the Prelude is that after all the flurry of activity you land on the soothing major chord and stay there for a while, before modulating to the dominant. You'll need to use eye contact and let the Soprano player lead that part.

The fugue is a simple theme in two parts- the rising long notes and the falling short notes. I make use of both parts as material for episodes. The Bass gets to wrap it up toward the end with a nice melody while the upper parts bang out chords until everyone hits the first fermata. Then a Grand Pause followed by a second fermata, kind of like Beethoven in some of his piano sonatas. Finally, the home stretch back at tempo to the end!
